A radio imaging voice workflow with VoiceCast

By Danaps Imaging ·

A radio imaging voice needs to remain intelligible inside a production containing music and effects. Build the sound while moving between the isolated voice and the actual mix. VoiceCast brings cleanup, dynamics, tone and creative delay into the same workflow.

Start with a clean, controlled read

Check the untreated recording for clipping and distracting edits. Try a Danaps Imaging Balanced or Impact preset, then select the mode that suits the production. Broadcast offers tighter peak control; Studio provides another character to compare. Set Input on the loudest part of the read before adjusting the tonal controls.

Place the voice against music

Listen in the production mix and adjust Body for weight and Clarity or Presence for definition. Use Air only as much as the recording needs. Check De-ess after adding brightness. When a frequency masks the voice, use Graphic EQ for a focused correction and return to the full mix before judging it. Extra vocal weight is useful only while the words remain understandable.

Control pauses and add creative effects

Set Noise Gate with the quietest words and endings in mind. Use the optional De-Click control for mouth clicks while checking that consonants remain intact. Open FX and introduce Delay or Echo gradually. Evaluate effects at the end of the phrase, where repeats may overlap the next element. Compare Width settings in mono as well as stereo before committing.

Compare in context and check delivery

Use A/B to compare a restrained version with a stronger one, manually matching Output during the decision. Check the loudest phrase, the last word and transitions into music. Save the chosen settings for this voice and production. The plugin’s level and gain reduction displays help you follow processing; check final loudness and true peak separately against the requirements of the station or delivery platform.
